It is rather interesting how people's attitude changes there, yes.

I only had this happen once, and people went pretty much right away to "mocking/anger"; but then, maybe it was just a few loud-mouthed idiots, and maybe everyone else silently agreed with me when I thought that those speaking up were, well, loud-mouthed idiots indeed.

Of course, I do wish people who want to kill themselves would choose a method that doesn't affect others, but ultimately, being a few minutes or even a couple of hours late pales in comparison to what somebody who committed suicide went through.

Ah well.
