Hmm, I keep meaning to find a German tutor/evening classes, but never quite get around to doing so.  It would come in very handy for the career further down the line.

I don't really know of any better way to improve, though.  Unfortunately, practising with native friends never, ever works, particularly when their English is already nearly as good as yours! :)
