Yep, I often found that. I wanted to start speaking in a foreign language and because their English is better than my foreign language, they tend to get annoyed and start speaking English. Still, sometimes you can find someone willing to speak to you. Good luck with it :)

Cheers!  Just out of interest, how did you find it easiest to learn and improve?  Private tuition all along, more of a small group environment with people of similar ability, or some other way?

I lived there. There is nothing better than total immersion in order for you to improve. It's often automatic. Apart from that, I tend to listen to music in that foreign language. Being a fan of German metal helps with that, of course. Doing that means you can get an ear for how the language sounds.
