29 January

After a very protracted conversation with BT in which I had to phone their automated helpline three times because it did not cover the exact option I was after (I have no order number you see) I finally had it confirmed to me that my broadband will be installed next Tuesday, 29 January. Apparently it takes five working days to activate it. I don't know why this is, I would have thought all they would have to do is flick a switch - BT landline, BT broadband - but evidently not. Ah well, ho hum. At least I'll be online again in less than a week :-)

In other news Wolfie came over last night to deliver a new computer for me. It was cool to see him and it was fun showing him around my flat and the local area. I'm really glad that he likes my new place and it was great to get up to some kinkiness in my own actual space. Very pleasing and definitely a major advantage of moving out.

Money could be an issue though, particularly after I spent £100 on DVDs this afternoon. Hey, January is always a cheap time and the first six series of Family Guy for a mere £65 is a bargain in my eyes, irrespective of how much money you don't have...

It's probably just like on the Simpsons:

DNA guy: Ooh, nice eyelash. Yours?
Wiggum: No. We need to find out who it belonged to. We want a DNA test.
DNA guy: Ooh, ooh, ee, ooh, ooh, that takes, uh, eight to ten weeks.
Wiggum: [sighs, hands him a carton of cigarettes]
DNA guy: Did I say weeks? 'Cause I meant seconds.

That's pretty much about it, except that BT tends to have a massive backlog at almost all times for their engineers. I've seen them do it in 2 days before, but that's a rarity.

I wasn't ready for 7 days anyway as it happened. It's online now, that's the main thing :D

I can quite imagine. I used to work for an ISP and all it was was them sending the details to BT to activate the line - that caused the delay. But this is BT passing details to BT, I still don't know why it took so long. Credit checks maybe?

Not enough pressure on them to provide good customer service, I suppose.

Potentially although now they are competing with other ISPs and telecoms companies then you'd expect more from them. Problem is they own and run all the lines that the other companies must use so if they want to undercut them all they need to do is be a bitch to those other companies.

There you go, then. :P

But I went fully with BT, using their own ISP. Surely they would try to make themselves quicker with respect to other ISPs?

If it benefits them, yes... but if they feel there's no real competition and that nobody else will be able to do better, I can imagine that they wouldn't.

Meddle not in the affairs of BT for they are both inneffable and inscrutable.

They scare me. They live in this big prick on Goodge Street *shudder*.

A confirmation? Good, some progress has been made then.

And I agree with your analysis of the DVD bargin by the way, you just can't let such bargins slip away!

I agree but when money is tight sometimes it makes living a little more difficult. Ah well, it was definitely worth it. Am halfway through series two, 'tis very good.

And yep I'm back online now! Yeys! :D
