Furry Marketing

Does a company's use of a fursuit or a furry concept make you more or less likely to buy the product being advertised? Elephant.co.uk use an elephant fursuit whilst Foxy Bingo use (an admittedly poor) fox one. Do/Would you let the advertising sway you in this way?

As for me, I can't stand that bastard Coco Monkey in the Coco Pops advert so I never buy those nobbly balls of monkey shit. However I do like Quickie the Nesquik Bunny and so buy a lot of his chocolate flavoured powder to add to my milk. In many ways I would like to be Quickie - he seems to happy and bouncy selling chocolate milk all day. It must be a good life.

And then, added to this, does anyone buy products because they want to yiff the character?

*chuckles* I answer no to both questions. For me, advertising is a big turn off, furry or not. However, I thought that foxy bingo suit was considered popular in the fandon?

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think some people really like the foxy bingo suit and others really hate it. The advert with everyone in the street was apparently filmed very near where I live but I can't identify the street myself.

I generally try to not let advertising influence me, although I'll refuse to buy products or from companies that use particularly obnoxious ads or commercials.

[identity profile] shep-shepherd.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. In fact, I tend not to buy products which are advertised on TV or in the newspapers.

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally tend not to too but we've all done it, haven't we? And I do tend to favour companies with good advertising over ones with poor advertising. What I particularly hate is negative advertising. Those companies that slag off their rivals instead of promoting their own product.

[identity profile] shep-shepherd.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that my decision to buy a Rover 200 in 2000 was largely on the strength of the model's original 1989 advertising campaign :)

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That was a fine campaign...

Or perhaps did you think that it was a new Rover and were dismayed to find that they hadn't botched up the advertising and accidentally drop a 0?

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to do the same. The problem with advertising is it's subliminal and if it gets your attention and makes you remember the product then it has done its job. This means some of the most banal or stupid ads are the ones that get remembered and the companies prosper. Having said that, I will never buy insurance through Churchill simply because those ads piss me off so much.

[identity profile] schnee.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, true... the only thing you can really do is not subject yourself to advertising to begin with if you can help it.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-11 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is that I can't as due to my job, I have to have certain rolling news channels on in the background. I am so sick of certain adverts, it's unreal...

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's me too, I should've logged in :(

It is a massive part of my life, indeed and I think I should buy products that reflect this lols. Seriously, if something is advertised by a furry character I am far more likely to remember it and therefore use that service. It's also good to see advertisers finally tapping into the furry market.

And Quickie is just a dude :D

*earperks* Ooh what's the Schwäbisch Hall Fox? Do you have any pics? And what does he advertise? I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about certain characters *blushes*

Ah yes I know him! I saw him advertising something in Stuttgart. I thought he was megamrr back then too. He is rather yiffy I must admit. I would do a balloon ride in him any day... :P

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's me too, I don't think I logged in :(

[identity profile] shep-shepherd.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! He's definitely a furry character :)

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was on holiday in Stuttgart there was a big billboard with the guy on. Every day I walked past this 8ft character, it was fantastic! Plus he was offering me a fantastic interest rate and the size of his endowment was favourable too!

And as for the balloon ride, I'd do anything to get inside him... (joke :P)

I find.....

[identity profile] mefurry.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
that most advertising mascots are not of the best quality. I think they suffer from the trying to please everybody syndrome. Toons are usually the best in these cases but still even then. It's not to say they're bad, just not up to shall we say "the furry standard." The couple of "Toytime" internet reindeer commercials (company died after one Xmas season I think.) were great fursuits, excellent!

Re: I find.....

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh I haven't seen the Toytime commercials, perhaps I should check them out. They intrigue me greatly hehe.

I agree about the poor quality of mascots and this is one of the major drawbacks. Being a discerning Furry I guess I am too picky too but even if they are poorer quality, the ads are still a hell of a lot better than most. And at least they tried. As you say though, cartoon animals tend to be better :)

I've sent you an e mail with one of the Toytime commercials as an attachment. I had saved it from You Tube some long time ago.

That is rather mrr *wags*

[identity profile] tr-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
No!

And you think Foxy Bingo's fursuit is bad? I thought it was kinda cool.

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's creepy. Really creepy. The head is all wrong and he looks about as slimy as Peter Lilley. I half expect him to pounce on the old dears at the bingo and eat them - it's like the Bingo Hall is a giant chicken coup *shudders*

[identity profile] tr-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you see the OLD Foxy Bingo suit? THAT was scary!

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That may be the one I am thinking of. It has improved but it still weirds me out. I think it's something to do with a fox head and human hands - it's a horrible hybrid and probably a mistake at a government science laboratory somewhere...

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The old foxy was definitely more creepy, it was like a scientific experiment gone wrong. The latest one is better but the gloved hands and the Bolton accent still weird me out :P

Not since I was about six. Nowadays I don't watch TV anymore. :)

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I very rarely watch TV for pleasure but it's on at work as I need the rolling news to do my job. This means I get to see the same adverts every 15 minutes, all day, every day. It's enough to make you go insane.

In some ways my mental age is still about six, I guess that's why I am influenced by Furry advertising :)

[identity profile] fen-ra.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Those adverts have no effect on me, either in my brain or in my ****.

You missed the old lady who a few of us got stopped by during the fursuit walk in Leeds. She was sweet... but was convinced the fox on Foxy Bingo is the work of the devil himself, designed to be cute to ensnare you into the evil game of bingo, from which there is no escape. I need to see if my video of that came out right!

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
As I wrote above to TR, I think it's more a case of eating the old dears rather than ensnaring them into the evil game of bingo. I mean bingo's lovely, all whimsical and a good day out for everyone. Fancy a game?

[identity profile] spargue.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man I love the nesquick bunni, It looks like bunni poo and feeds my scat fetish!
j/k :p

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I have always thought that Nesquik Chocolate Cereal is scary. It looks like rabbit shit and rabbits are coprophages, yet without any irony, here we have a rabbit eating it and getting kids to do the same!! I'd lock the bastard up if you ask me. But I'd still like to be him...

[identity profile] spargue.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He's delightfully evil. I wonder why no-one else has made the connection and rule 34'd it

(Anonymous) 2008-05-11 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely we can't be the only ones?! The worrying thing is that it was obvious with me. Does that make me odd?! Eep...

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's me btw *hugs*

(Anonymous) 2008-05-11 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not the Nesquik Bunny!! For a start this character has breasts!!! :P

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's me too - that's quite clearly not the Nesquik Bunny. Breasts scare me for a start :P
