Fumadores

Day two of my Portuguese odessy saw me take a trip to Belem, on the outskirts of the city, and to the place where some believe Jesus was born. There is a Museum of Electricity there now, as well as a bridge, but sadly the Museum was closed and the bridge had lots of cars on it. We went to a memorial to Vasco de Gama, the great Portuguese explorer and next to it was a beautiful rosa dictating all of Portugalºs sixteenth century colonial conquests. It was rather beautiful. Sadly, we didnºt get to go up the monument for a panoramic view of Lisbon as we were three minutes late and it had closed :(

Next we went to a unique shop which sold Pasteis de Nata - a pasty cake deeley infused with warm cream. It was like something youºd get out of Greggs only much nicer and more gooey. The shop uses a traditional ancient recipe that not even the serving staff know, itºs such a closely guarded secret, and it has been famous in Lisbon ever since it opened in 1837.

We also went to a McDonalds for a beer. Yes, a beer. I have always thought that itºs a sad indictment for Britain and its approach to alcohol that McDonalds canºt serve beer, which most of them do on the continent. It was Super Bock and although itºs sharper than Sagres, itºs not as nice and I have downed another litre of that since I have been speaking to you.

Daisukeºs mother
also very kindly cooked more food for us and we had a discussion about Portugalºs national poet - Luís de Camões - whose day it was yesterday. My Spanish is rapidly improving and I was impressed how much we understood of each other as I have not spoken Spanish in over a year.

Tomorrow is the day of Portugal v Czech Republic and I canºt wait. I think we are going to a bar to see the game and I want to get caught up in the football fever.

The other thing to point out by the way is the ominous used rubber glove I saw as I walked past the window sill of a room on my way to passport control at Lisbon airport. I swear there was a bit of brown on two of the fingertips...

It's because apparently alot of the people ion the UK have lost all common sense when it comes to moderating their drinking habits.

Sad isn't it. It's like little children: if you can't play nicely I'll take it away!

I find it quite annoying. I am an adult and I can make my own decisions. Why should my fun (and the fun of the vast majority) be halted just because a mindless few behavine in an irresponsible manner? Apparently, Portugal has similar drinking problems to the UK regarding violence etc yet they would never dream of banning alcohol to the extent we do here. In fact, it was refreshing yesterday to be able to buy a bottle of beer and be able to walk around the city drinking it, before getting on the boat to head back to Diasukeºs. Not one person stopped me or asked me to discard my bottle because I was drinking responsibly. It may sound a little exaggerated, but it was the first time that I have tasted freedom for quite a long time.

Very easy to see first hand at a lot of furmeets these days too, which only seem to be deemed a success by an increasing number of attendees now if they can't stand by the end of the day!

[identity profile] albrecht-fur.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I've been noticing a similar trend.
It's a little shameful really, the meets are turning into some sort of drunken creche.

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Just with less baby food. I tend to agree but I thought furries had the reputation of not spending much money. Surely thatºs another trend being bucked if what you say is true.

I like the idea of a creche. Some furmeets are definitely becoming like that, what with the behaviour of particular people who do not know what is and what isnºt socially acceptable behaviour.

[identity profile] albrecht-fur.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's like people are using it an excuse to just be monumentally stupid and hyper, with no thought to anyone around them.
I'd seriously consider not bothering if it weren't for a core of actually cool people I go to catch up with.

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-06-13 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to agree with that. I love meeting new people and catching up with old friends but a fair few times now I have been embarrassed to be a part of a group which contains those whose behaviour is just not acceptable in a public surrounding.

I still go to meets though as they are great fun a lot of the time :)

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I canºt say I have noticed this outside of the usual suspects (sadly myself included but I have never got paralytic nor caused a problem). I suppose Newcastle at the weekend was the one time that a lot of people were drinking but I guess if you meet in a pub and donºt have the gumption to do anything else after that then what do you expect? You canºt expect to go to a pub at 11am and remain sober after spending most of the day there - unless you donºt drink at all.

Sounds like you're having a cracking time buddy - drink in that culture!

Iºm having great fun and Daisuke and his family are excellent hosts. The football match this afternoon and the Aquapark tomorrow are going to be immense and I canºt wait *bounces*

I hope England is bright and sunny and that you are counting down the days to ConFuzzled. At the moment for me, itºs one exciting thing after another :D

lol ill get emo if portugal lose today :P
lol but we will win :P

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Youºd better not get emo hun because emo green huskies do not make for fun *bounce*

I donºt imagine you will lose today and I want to hear the Ronaldo love-in from a Portugese rather than Manchester United/English perspective...

Arrr Super Bock had that in Nando's not too bad beer but I've had better :D (again we kept going back for more) You can remember my reaction last time we were in Germany and getting a beer from MC its quite novel drinking out of your usual McDonald's cup filled with beer!

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I didnºt realise Nandos had Super Bock - I may have to go cruising there more often but as itºs not for veggies (and if it is, they imply that they may eat me) then perhaps I should give that one a miss.

Agree about McDonalds, it is strange. I donºt know why we donºt allow them to sell alcohol in the ULK. I guess fast food places and proper restaurants are governed by different legislation as Pizza Hut in the UK can serve alcohol.

Glad to hear you're having a good time out there bun! I'll be looking forwards to seeing you when you're back too. =:)

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Bun? Bun?! Iºm no rabbit, Iºm a pure thoroughbred husky I have you know :P

Yep, Iºm having great fun - daisuke is really sweet and is showing me around (and tolerating the Lupe experience for four solid days - bless him) and I am having a great time. Lisbon is a fascinating city and the green husky is showing me around places that others just wouldnºt get to see. On the way, I have also been offered cocaine twice - nice little accompaniement to my day there.

Itºs going to be great seeing you again too hun, particularly at ConFuzzled. That weekend is going to rock and I canºt wait :D

Is there some odd keyboard there that keeps turning apostrophes into an odd symbol? o.O But anyways, bun is going to be my equivalent of your hun, I have now decided, muah ha ha haa.... =:P

So...

It's good to hear you're enjoying yourself. How long are you over there for bun? *grin*

[identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I am enjoying my bun yes, the buns here are quite good and I will be staying until I get myself una bun supreme. I am here until tomorrow when I sadly go home to rainy weather but at least I will see my Master and all you guys at ConFuzzled next week, which is a massive filip.

I like the bun thing but I donºt know if it will take on - whereºs the precedent for the use of the word? And I donºt use hun that much do I?

The apostrophe key is in an odd place on this keyboard and º is where it would be on a UK keyboard. I quite like the º so I am going to keep using it. Stop bullying him! He gets upset when you guys donºt like him!! :(
