The Rising Cost Of Ham
Apr. 14th, 2011 09:26 amFor my lunch, I buy Sainsbury's economy ham. When I moved into Pudsey in February 2010, a pack cost 45p. In the summer it jumped to 47p and in November 52p. January saw it rise to 55p and it has now just risen again to 58p. This is a 29% increase when CPI inflation is currently at 4%.
Interestingly though, the price of economy white bread at Sainsbury's has stayed the same (47p), whilst Heinz soup has been reduced by 5p a can (90p down to 85p). This suggests it's not your overall shop but specific elements of your basket which are getting more expensive. I wonder if there is a link to be found here - perhaps economy goods were underpriced and this is why the biggest rises are seen here. Doesn't explain the bread though.
*I use Sainsbury's for small shops as it's local, not out of any real choice. Big shops go to ASDA. Also ham, bread and soup are the only three things I regularly buy so it's the only easy means I have of comparison.
