A Right Royal Good Time
Jun. 4th, 2012 06:43 pmIt's Jubilee weekend and I have successfully managed to avoid nearly all of it. I comfortably fall into a group that is neither pro nor anti the whole thing. I can see the arguments from Monarchists and Republicans but ultimately, I'm not too interested in the whole affair so I've been delightfully doing my own thing. Cudos to those who are celebrating it and I genuinely felt down about yesterday's appalling weather, but in the end, like the owners of our local pub, I'm just not that bothered.
Having said that, I have used the weekend to do things I enjoy, planned around the usual mountain of work which is prevailent at this type of year of course. On Friday evening, an impromptu pub gathering saw us attract over 25 furs, a number which was difficult to fit into most bars such was their busy nature ahead of the Jubilee festivities. We settled on Massey's, the usual haunt for the Leeds meets, and a great time was had by all. It was great catching up with everyone and the whole evening had a very relaxing feel to it, moreso than is usual with me around furs. Around 15 of us then headed to Little Tokyo for some noms and carp, which was a most excellent way to end the evening. The furry scene in Leeds has certainly grown over the last year or so, with many locals now being encouraged to come out and say hello. It's quite amazing really. Consequently, we are going to start running a regular Leeds Minimeet on the third Saturday of every month. Hope to see you there.
Panthras stayed with us from Friday through Sunday as his other commitments meant it was far easier for him to cotch in Leeds than it would have been to go back home. It was great having him around as always. The Studkitty is one of the nicest and most well-rounded furs I know, and it would appear he can pretty much talk to anyone about anything. I envy that really, he's a sports-loving fur who also knows computer games, anime and a load of other stuff of which I have little experience. Oh to fit in so well! His enthusiasm is also infectious and consequently, we may be going to ConFuzzled next year after his many exhaltations over this year's event. Of course, it depends when it is and what my work commitments are, but we are certainly considering it.
On Saturday, we headed into town as Panthras wanted a computer game and some decks. This was after a delicious Wetherspoons breakfast of Eggs Benedict and real ale at 11am in one of our local pubs. The range of new real ales has been one of the advantages of the Jubilee and I have certainly enjoyed sampling as many as possible. The trip to town was reasonably uneventful, looking in shops before settling for some high strength continental lagers in one of our favourite bars, before Enteirah, who had also stayed the night at ours after the Friday pubbage, needed to split and I needed to head home to meet up with my father and sister.
My relatives were travelling back home from Sheffield, where my sister will be moving come July, and as my house is halfway between the two, they decided to call in for a chat and a curry. We took them to Abid's, a local restaurant of fine stature, where I had a luminescent red tikka and the world's biggest garlic naan which I carved to look a bit like Sweden. I rarely see my family, last time being late January, so it was great for Wolfie and I to catch up with them. We then took them home to meet Panthras before they headed off and we spent the rest of the evening snoozing and boozing.
We headed out to the local after 11 and discovered it was bedecked in bunting, even though the landlady admitted "they wouldn't get up from their pints if the Queen drove past the door. If she's not coming here, why should I bother celebrating it?". Sadly, the brewery had tied their hands so the bunting went up, making the place look like a tacky seaside resort like all bunting does. Cloth bunting is far better than the cheap plastic tat which seems to be hanging in most places at the moment although I want to start my own line in latex bunting. I think Wolfie and I will be making this soon. Anyway, most of the locals weren't happy about the bunting either while the pedant in me was unhappy about Northern Ireland being included on a map of Britain. Still, it was all good natured fun and I'll admit the atmosphere in the pub was amongst the best it's ever been.
Our landlady was in high spirits, thinking Panthras looked like a more attractive version of Henry VII before urging him to get into acting. I am not sure whether he was flattered or not but it happened so I have recorded it. After this, we all headed home and grabbed some sleep before another busy day ahead.
