It looks like it's going to be a rather frugal summer as we have decided to carry out our loft extension slightly earlier than planned. When we moved into our new place, building into the attic was always the plan but we need some more storage pretty desperately and the increased size will definitely aid our hosting potential.

There are quite a few reasons why we are wanting to extend. The first is that it will boost the value of the house quite significantly as we will be turning a two bedroom home into a four bedroom. This could become quite useful should we need to rent or sell the property in light of an unfavourable result in the pending EU referendum. Another consideration is that we can move the play room upstairs, combining it with our bedroom and thus creating our own private area on the top floor. This will not only give us a far bigger play space but it will also avoid uncomfortable situations should non-furry guests come around, particularly my family. My mother has already questioned our use of the spare room but doesn't know the reality, I hope to keep it that way. Doing this will also enable us to create a spare bedroom for guests, as well as converting the dungeon to a computer room, thus giving us far more room and a diverse use of space. We may also get a bathroom put in upstairs, this is as yet undecided.

We have phoned around a number of builders but only one has got back to us with a quote. I would rather have three or four quotes before making a decision but if some people don't get back to you, it says quite a bit about how much they care. It is difficult to know who to trust when it comes to such projects but the builder came round to survey the property last week and we got on well. He found the playroom quite hilarious, and it turned out he was a fellow liberal like myself. His quote seems competitive and he is accredited so hopefully it will be alright if we do go with him. We are looking at other options but if we do press ahead, we could have the extension completed by the end of August, should we be able to find the cash. The builder is just doing the shell and we will do the rest, including decorating, plumbing and electrics, although we have now asked for a quote on these too just to see what the price is. I am looking forward to getting this done, even if it will likely mean some sacrifices at the end of the year. If we get this and the cavity wall situation sorted for the house, I would say it's been a good year overall regarding the home. Hopefully it'll pan out well.
