Since coming back from CeSFuR on Tuesday, two major things have happened in addition to working a rather pleasant three-day week.

The first was on Tuesday night when we went down to a Taste of the USA beer tasting session with Paul. As usual, we were the only two people at the event, although two others had booked but cancelled, presumably because of the baking hot weather (we took advantage of this by having a BBQ with pulled pork burgers - we have had far fewer BBQs this year than last so I do hope the fabulous weather holds). To be honest, BrewDog is not the best place to be when its roasting as the Grade II listed building has no real insulation, and the discomfort was enhanced by a previous power cut which made the burglar alarm beep annoyingly every thirty seconds. Despite this, it was great catching up again with Paul and trying six truly fantastic ales from all across the United States. The event had been scheduled for the Monday before we went away but it was postponed as all of the new stock hadn't arrived, which was probably for the best considering my usual workload before I go on holiday coupled with our 4:20am get up time. The event was quite relaxed and afterwards, we popped downstairs to enjoy a few more drinks, although this was slightly ruined by an obnoxious prick from Kirkstall riling a drunk Spaniard, so much so that the bar staff started to get quite pissed off. I made them laugh by making rude gestures behind the drunk ones' backs but it wasn't particularly enjoyable. Thankfully I don't think I've ever been that bad in a bar, meaning when I'm drunk there, the relative effect looks more positively on me. Anyway, the whole evening was a success despite the sweltering heat and being slightly late to the party due to doing post- holiday stuff (and having an excruciating drive to Doncaster to pick up a bumper for Wolfie's Vectra) and we are looking forward to the next one - the UK vs Denmark on Tuesday 28 July - if you want to come, then let me know.

Despite the beer tasting session, between now and EF in mid-August, we are hoping to lose some weight. I've put on 2kg over the last fortnight and although I think some of this will be lost by being back to a regular diet, I do want to lose about 5-7kg. My weight has been pretty static for the last three years, meaning my gym efforts are being cancelled out be drinking and restaurants, and I really want to address this as it's denting my confidence and making me feel guilty whenever I do indulge. We'll still honour the commitments we have made but now is a good time to do it as we need to save money for the forthcoming loft extension. Consequently, I'm going to try and cut out restaurants completely (the main culprit) and limit the drink too, switching to gin rather than ale when I can. Since getting the fitness app on my iPhone, I've also started to become more competitive with myself regarding the number of steps I take and the distance I walk in a day (32,000+/24km+ on Monday) and I'm hoping this love for numbers will spur me on like the Untappd app did with drinking. I'm considering getting a Fitbit or equivalent to help with this too so hopefully I'll stick to it this time, I'm getting sick of procrastinating. The diet started on Wednesday but was scuppered almost immediately when my boss presented me with a Wigan meat and potato pie the first thing after I arrived back in the office. Still it was appreciated and quite tasty, even if the potatoes were like boulders.

Speaking of the loft extension, the designer came around last night to draw up plans, which he'll submit to the structural engineer and the builder. We've already paid for this, about 15% of the total, and we have been told that this process will take about two to three weeks. This means the building work won't commence until late July at the earliest but with EF looming I imagine it'll be late-August before we start. Still, I'm glad things are all in motion and this will give us more time to save up, which is no bad thing. We're hoping to have it all completed by the end of the year. We've already told one neighbour about it, we just have the other one to tell now, the one who lives adjacent to us. Hopefully that'll all be okay.

Finally, I am happy that Confuzzled (27-31 May) doesn't clash with Eurovision (14 May) next year, meaning our traditional party is back on. It's highly unlikely I'll be at Confuzzled as it's back at the Metropole again (and there are cons which are far better value for money in my opinion) but it will be great to have all our friends around for the pop extravaganza two weeks before, we really missed them this year.
