Tushy Pegs!
Sep. 7th, 2015 07:16 pmThe bus journey this morning was bliss on account of the kids being back at school, although the return journey was its usual busy self and has been this way since Northern Rail included the 4-7pm period in their peak price ticket. Even travelling at 7pm, the bus is rammed and a far less pleasant experience but at least there was reasonable quiet this morning, aiding the writing of this journal. Hopefully I'll be able to update more often now but it is interesting how the car drivers hate the kids being back at school as it adds time to their journey yet for me it actually results in a quicker and beggary experience when they aren't off. I'm also glad that normal service has been resumed on the bus after their reduced summer schedule, for which they didn't even provide us with a timetable.
The main thing which happened last week was my first trip to a dentist in four years. I know oral hygiene is important but when you are paying for it, you are less likely to want to go. Still, I noticed some tartar build up on my teeth which I had left for far too long so thought I had better get it sorted. As I could no longer get a direct bus to my old dentist on account of the routes being changed, I went to a local one in Pudsey. They didn't have the greatest reviews on the NHS Direct website but I've learnt to not really trust the views of the general British public and so it proved once again as the practice was clean and the experience pleasant. They took an X-Ray of my teeth as it was my first time there while they did scrape the tartar from between my teeth. Aside from that, everything was fine, although they did say my far back molars were a little squeezed in. Still generally nothing to worry about, which was a relief, and I have booked a further appointment in six months' time so as to get into the habit of a general dental routine.
Sunday was very much a day of recovering after two nights at the beer festival, although we didn't feel that bad as we awoke to a rather sunny day. A bacon sandwich resolved most of our problems, particularly as we had bought the bacon and bread from a local farm shop we had been meaning to use for years but only visited for the first time on Saturday. While a little more expensive than the supermarkets, the quality was definitely higher, with their pies and pasties a particular treat. We'll definitely be going there again.
After breakfast, we kept working on the spare room, ripping up the floor and putting the finishing touches to the painting. We are very nearly close to finishing the room now, having just the carpet to lay, so we should be done before the attic extension work starts on 28 September. That'll be four weeks of hell but at least we now have the office completed, so we can move things into there while the building work is progressing.
The decorating can only really be done incrementally due to paint drying, leaving us with a largely free afternoon. We decided to go into Pudsey to check out the Family Fun Day as there was a beer festival promised, a festival that turned out to be a small stand serving the usual fizzy lagers opposite a music stage in the market space. There was a token based system in operation but as there was very little beer here of interest, we moved on, checking out the festivities in Pudsey Park. It seemed like the whole town was out and there was a good mix of concessions, a few fairground rides in the leisure centre car park and some stalls selling crafts, food and face painting. In one far corner there was a dog show so there were loads of impressive dogs to watch while the local bikers had also turned up and had pitched a place near the far entrance. Overall it was a nice place to stroll around in the sun drinking in the atmosphere although after about 40 minutes we had exhausted it all. We decided not to get a beer - there was one IPA we hadn't tried but as it was Theakston's, we thought it would be easy to find elsewhere - largely as Wolfie needed to drive to his father's so he could wish him a happy birthday.
A quick call around at the supermarket for gifts and B&Q for more DIY supplies saw us head over to Mr and Mrs Wolfie's place where we had a pleasant couple of hours sitting in the sun. A family friend called Trevor and his wife turned up halfway through which was a little awkward but they were pleasant people, telling us about their son's experiences in prison which was quite fascinating. We also grabbed a curry from a local takeaway, with Mr enjoying my first ever bhuna. It wasn't too hot and with two chapattis the volume of food wasn't great, but this didn't stop me from feeling bloated for the rest of the evening. I fear that I'm allergic to one of the spices in curry as I always feel this way after eating it, particularly when bought from a takeaway. I hope this is not the case as I love curry but I've noticed in the last few years this annoying trend has developed. With Mr Wolfie needing to go to Birmingham, we left at around 6pm, going home to rip up the flooring in the spare room and generally continue our decorating.
