Super Bowl And Shrove Tuesday
Feb. 11th, 2016 11:03 pmOne of the main reasons why I decided to leave London on Saturday evening was that the following day was Super Bowl Sunday and we had been toying with doing something for a while. Initially, the plan had been to go to a bar in Bradford but with money tight and my jeans getting tighter, coupled with the fact I had a few important meetings at work on the Monday (thus I couldn't book it off), I thought it best to stay at home so we invited Taneli around and had an enjoyable evening watching some FOOTBALL!! I had bought a range of tasty treats from Marks and Spencer while I contented myself with a limited amount of alcohol as Wolfie, Taneli and myself watched the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers in a match that was bereft of many of the thrills and spills of the previous two Super Bowls I had seen but was definitely a more intriguing tactical defensive encounter. With friends, the game passed quite quickly, and I was utterly absorbed, not feeling particularly tired even though it wasn't until 4am by the time I got to bed. This was the first Super Bowl I had watched without the Seattle Seahawks so I could watch it devolved of passion, making for a less intense experience and certainly a more relaxing one. Coldplay surprised during the half-time show but it still was nowhere near the epicness of left shark from the year before, while getting involved with the American furs on Twitter who were also watching the game added to the sense of community about it. There were a few anti-sports fans proclaiming their disinterest but far fewer than previous years, and I hope that something similar manifests itself for Euro 2016 in four months' time. All in all, it was definitely an enjoyable evening.
Tuesday was of course Pancake Day and we had planned a little party, largely because we wanted to try the delectable taste of haggis pancakes once again. A few years back we had sampled these around at Arcais Panda's house and this year the favour was returned, with us hosting a little gathering for Taneli, Raddy and Arc on the Tuesday evening. Everyone was charged with bringing a filling and we had an impressive range - with Nutella, sugar and banana in addition to some delicious reduced fruit compotes (cherry and blackberry) that the panda had made at home. She also brought some lactose-free pancake batter while we used some pre-made mix from M&S, so we had plenty of food for everyone, with four pancakes each being the average. The panda did most of the cooking, with me chatting to her and eating broken pancakes as she did while the others watched YouTube videos. The conversation between Arc and myself was another one of our private friendship chats which I find quite heartwarming due to the strong sense of trust and closeness engendered by them. We did have to conduct ourselves in a bit of a stink though as Raddy had brought some petrol-soiled bananas and a smelly hot water bottle that he wanted filling up. As we were cooking the pancakes, we placed them into two piles - milky and non-lactose - and once all were ready, we watched a shitty episode of 'Don't Tell The Bride' (which I call 'Don't Tell The Puppy') as we helped ourselves to the feast on offer. Unfortunately, the quantity of fillings was quite high and I overloaded my pancakes frequently so everything fell out, but this only added to the sense of fun and hilarity with which the evening was conducted. The pancakes were delicious and I do like the random dinner parties that we do, so much so that we really should do more in the future as they are great fun. The BBQ season can't come soon enough.
