Last night was little Brewdog's fifth birthday and they had put on a special evening to celebrate. Considering we went to opening night back in 2013 - I even wrote about it on this journal which I shared with the staff last week, making them smile - we thought the least we could do was pop down and celebrate with them. Indeed, quite a few of the bar staff there are like friends to us, and it was also an opportunity to see Brett and Jo, who we haven't seen for a good few months now.
Alas our friends received some bad news yesterday morning and so couldn't make it out, while Stray and Taneli were too busy to join us too. This meant it was just Wolfie and I, and we rushed down there for 6pm, which was the time they were releasing their special birthday beer. I feared we would be too late, but in the end, we got there with about ten minutes to spare. Wolfie was before me so he ordered Wild's Wildebeest beer, only for me to order him the same when I arrived five minutes later. And at 11%, it was certainly a heavy start to the evening. We couldn't get our paws on the birthday beer until it was time, but it was worth the wait, a delicious milk stout with a blueberry muffin aftertaste. It was quite unlike anything we had had before, and I got a can for Brett as he requested it.
We were on the sofa on the first floor and managed to wangle table service, which was nice, so we quickly demolished through the four draft beers we hadn't yet tried. There was a couple new to Brewdog next to us and we advised them a little bit. There was a quiz slated for 7:30pm which was brewer versus brewer - with Northern Monk and Ridgeside participating as they had collaborated on the birthday beer. We could have entered but it was all beer related and far too technical for us. In some respects, this was a shame as we didn't feel particularly included, and this was one of the reasons why we left quite early. We did have a can of the maple flavoured Kamikaze Knitting Club in house before taking some To Ol cans away, with us deciding to explore other options for drink.
As we are saving money, we haven't been out in Leeds too much recently so there were a few bars we hadn't yet tried. One of them was Eden, an eSports bar underneath the railway arches near the main church. This turned out to be quite a nice place, certainly if you are into competitive gaming, but I won't lie by admitting that I did feel quite uncomfortable as it really isn't my scene. The beer was quite good in here, but I imagine I felt how the average furry would feel in a sports bar - in an alien world that felt a little uncomfortable. Still, I can see the advantage of running a furry gaming night here, so we may push this forward with the Leedsfurs.
Wolfie and I had quite an intimate relationship chat here, which stretched into Lazy Lounge, where we headed next. We had wanted to try the new Post Office bar but it was past 9pm by this point and it was closed. We settled on Kozel in the lounge, which was a pleasant way to end the evening, although its fizziness did mean it did take longer to drink than the other beers. We had walked pretty much to the bus stop before realising that we had left our bag of beer behind, forcing us to double-back and retrieve them. They recognised me as I walked in and gave the bag to me, but at this point the recriminations between Wolfie and I began and things started to turn sour. What was worse was we missed the bus, meaning a half an hour wait for the last one, which in turn meant getting home after midnight. This wasn't great as I had an interview today and needed to be sharp, so I was quite annoyed. We grabbed some snacks from Sainsbury's and decided to get a taxi back. To be fair, the driver was lovely, but it was £7.50 I would rather not have spent.
Once we had got home, the recriminations kept coming, not aided by the relationship talk we had had earlier. Ultimately, the end of the evening saw me self-harm again, which I deeply regret as I thought I was getting better. Indeed March has been characterised as being quite a good month and I feel I have taken a few steps back. However, I guess I just have to forgive myself and focus on my recent improvement and hope I won't lapse into it again. Wolfie was very upset this morning when I told him and while we have since resolved the issues, I am worried I am hurting him too much. Hopefully, I can pull away from it and not feel the craving to do it as it has marred what was generally a good evening.
