How Did We Ever Make It Through?
Dec. 23rd, 2019 10:08 pmIt's been a busy weekend really, kicking off on Friday evening with Wolfie attending his office Christmas Party. This left me at a loose end for the evening so I decided to swing by the German Christmas Market for my final slice of Knobi Brot of 2019, along with a tasty German snausage. I then headed over to the Little Leeds Beer Shop in the Corn Exchange, only to find everything closed far earlier than it used to be. This was annoying, so after swinging past Brewdog and noticing it rammed for Mad Friday, I decided just to head home and get an early night.
This meant I had to do my beer shopping on Saturday, which I did before the Leeds Meet. We got a taxi into town and I picked up my train tickets from the station before heading to the beer shop to pick up some last-minute Christmas presents for my father and Steve. I then swung by the Leeds Meet, which was incredibly well-attended with a large number of new people. This may hgave been down to the fact that we were the only meet on on Saturday, with the others moving their gatherings a week earlier to avoid the Christmas rush. This didn't seem to affect our meet though and it was great to see old friends and new faces, not least Arc, Avon and Taneli to whom I spoke predominently. Alas, because I had arranged to visit my family for Christmas this past weekend, I had to leave very early, departing just before 2pm even though I wanted to stay later.
I got to my dad's place just after 3pm, and due to the night drawing in already, we ended up just hanging around his house. He had to go and pick my sister up from Darlington station very late on, so he couldn't really drink, meaning we just downed cups of tea in between scrumptuous food of a cheeseboard and a beef stew. My sister's train journey north was fraught with problems and was running about a half hour late, the last thing she needed with a pretty nasty cold, but we did eventually manage to hook up and chat for a while. Once home, my Dad and I shared some beers.
Sunday was going round to my mother's day, with my sister driving us over mid-afternoon as my mum had to pick up some food from Marks and Spencer. The two dogs were on a walk when we arrived, but were incredibly excited to meet us on their return, probably far more excitable than usual. The rest of the day, as with my father, was spent just chatting and eating, with my mother cooking chestnut soup, guinea fowl and a baked brie for dessert. There was also a lot of wine, which made today's day at work somewhat difficult. We discussed a lot about my grandfather, whose mental and physical health has deteriorated significantly since October, and the challenges that this will bring on Christmas Day. In the end, due to other family illness, it would appear Christmas has now been cancelled for everyone and my mother will pop into the home where my grandfather now is instead. This is probably for the best. In other news, I didn't have an argument over something trivial with Steve either, which is something of a rarity.
We got back to my father's at about 10:30pm, satiated on food and wine, so the rest of the evening was rather chill, as was this morning. For the second successive time, the train was cancelled, delaying my passage into work by an hour, but at least it gave me more time to talk to my father. In the end, the whole weekend was pretty sedate, with some good conversation and food. Alas, I will now miss out on the big family Christmas on Wednesday and Thursday, as I usually do, as Wolfie would be on his own otherwise, but I am sure the two of us will have a great time together. We got all the food in earlier, surprisingly easily, so it should be a nice little day at least.
