One Of Those Sweet Sweet Consonants
Jul. 9th, 2023 10:55 pmI have four job leads heading into this week, including an interview on Tuesday. I have been humbled by the amount of help I am receiving in my search and I am hopeful I'll be able to land something soon. This made the last week at my last place much more bearable, even if it did trickle into nothing. In the end, there was very little for me to do apart from a few things to handover, and it was noticeable that not one member of senior management said anything about my departure. This was lamentable but unsurprising. My immediate manager was feeling quite morose, in contrast to me as I was feeling somewhat upbeat. Once Friday rolled around, I did feel liberated, despite the future uncertainty. The place really wasn't a good fit for me and it was time to leave. It'll be odd not having a job from tomorrow but I am still going to try and get up at my usual time and keep pushing things forward, at least for the next few days. I'm feeling optimistic but there is quite a lot to do.
Fortunately, this weekend was always going to be quite a cheap one, as the neighbours were hosting a party. This was in the play area in the courtyard out back, where some long tables and benches had been set up for its commencement at 4pm. It turns out these had been rented, with people bringing an array of different home-cooked foods for us to sample. There was a pasta salad, a potato salad, some fish-based toasties, some zucchini muffins and sausage-based baked squares as well as succulent chicken wings. We bought some cheapy snacks and ten litres of beer, in two kegs, which we kept cool using the sheaths and ice packs that come with our Hello Fresh boxes. It was quite a good system.
We got to speak to many of our neighbours and it turns out we have a lot in common with them. It's quite an international bunch with some wanting to try the craft beer bars with us and others wanting to go to the Union Jack whisky pub at some point in future (particuarly the South Americans for some reason). Our American friends were there with their little boy - who was wearing a dress and largely bumbling about. We also got to meet their derpy dog Daxter. Sadly, they are moving out in September due to issues with the landlord - they had a leak in their apartment that has taken four months to fix. The lady of the partnership is agender queer so we ended up talking about furries and my own genderfluidity. We also got talking to some of the Germans about the lack of German language practice we get here. It was all fun, even if we did get the police called on us at 7:45pm by some of the grumpy elderly cranks on the floors below. The police clearly saw we weren't being loud and let us get on with things. We packed up by 9:15pm, 45 minutes before the 10pm curfew. We ended up taking some of the cherry fruit cake back and having McDonald's as we hadn't eaten too much. It was then another long hot night on VR.
Today was scorchingly hot - 33C, the hottest day of the year so far. I wanted to go to BRLO this evening but Wolfie's foot has been playing up again and we think it may now be a reaction to soft cheese. We have been having much more of it with the Hello Fresh boxes of late. I did want to get out of the house though as it's been hitting 30C indoors. I did manage to finish and submit a story to an anthology as well as arrange Pony Chat, after which we went to the pizza place around the corner. They gave me the wrong pizza - I wanted a San Tomaso and they gave me one with literally everything on it - but it was good to get out of the house and away from the heat. Alas, we're now back here and I am feeling lethargic again, which is a pain. I can't even sit on the balcony and read as I'll be swarmed by wee beasties. I guess I'll just have to deal with it.
