It does rather remind me of Benidorm, per your description - looking at photos of pre-tourism Benidorm, versus what's there now.. well, a bit of a contrast. Still, there is a bit of an "old town" with a touch of panache - but similarly, the real fun, for me, comes with setting off inland a bit - pretty much as soon as you're away from the urbanisation, you hit the real Spain. Last time (somewhere around 2004), we had dinner on the way back into town in a little place tucked inside the mountainside - all quite quiet until about 9pm, and then the families (babes to grandparents) would start filtering in. All part of what I love about Mediterranean life. ^_^
El Rey sounds rather peacefully cool (now, at least) - if you do get photos up sometime, please include a few looks around there.
