Five (Yet Barely) Alive
Dec. 19th, 2011 09:58 amToday is my fifth annifursary. I know you can't 'join' the Fandom but on 19 December 2006 I became active in it by logging on to mIRC for the first time. I had just finished watching Rick Stein cooking for the Japanese ambassador. Top documentary, I suggest you watch it.
Since then, there have been many changes. Nowadays people travel far less than they used to, meaning I have lost touch with many former friends and the main meets aren't as fun as they used to be. Twitter has replaced LJ as the social network of choice which makes people sound far less interesting due to the constraining effect, as well as the superficiality, of 140 characters. The rise of conventions has also played a part in keeping people from the meets I feel.
Conversely, I now have more close friends than at any time since making myself known. And this really is the only thing that matters. In reality I see myself withdrawing from the Fandom somewhat in future to spend more time with small groups of close friends. I am becoming disillusioned with the meets and I feel more comfortable and happy amongst those who empathize with me. The lack of common interests between myself and the majority of furs will always be an issue so focusing on my true friends is definitely the way to go. That's not to say I will not be around, just my social relationships are likely to evolve.
