Five (Yet Barely) Alive

Today is my fifth annifursary. I know you can't 'join' the Fandom but on 19 December 2006 I became active in it by logging on to mIRC for the first time. I had just finished watching Rick Stein cooking for the Japanese ambassador. Top documentary, I suggest you watch it.
Since then, there have been many changes. Nowadays people travel far less than they used to, meaning I have lost touch with many former friends and the main meets aren't as fun as they used to be. Twitter has replaced LJ as the social network of choice which makes people sound far less interesting due to the constraining effect, as well as the superficiality, of 140 characters. The rise of conventions has also played a part in keeping people from the meets I feel.
Conversely, I now have more close friends than at any time since making myself known. And this really is the only thing that matters. In reality I see myself withdrawing from the Fandom somewhat in future to spend more time with small groups of close friends. I am becoming disillusioned with the meets and I feel more comfortable and happy amongst those who empathize with me. The lack of common interests between myself and the majority of furs will always be an issue so focusing on my true friends is definitely the way to go. That's not to say I will not be around, just my social relationships are likely to evolve.

Date: 2011-12-19 09:40 pm (UTC)People's activity in furrydom always changes - and that's hardly anything to worry about, so much as confirming they're still alive, and that everything else is, in turn, also changing. Who knows what'll happen with Twitter in five years? It seems entirely likely there'll be more mass migrations in the future, as other social networks arise; likewise, there'll be others - perhaps even the majority - who'll simply continue, short of LJ pushing up the daisies. I certainly do miss the folks who've given up on LJ, though - even though some are on Twitter, the lack of actual reading to sink your brainteeth into leaves me somehow dissatisfied.
You may well find some new aspect of furrydom winds up appealing, fall in with a particular group, tire of something else, or strike out into new creative directions, like trying your paw at drawing, music, or fursuit design. Who knows? ^_^

It's also difficult to predict social networking trends too but it would be good if LJ, or another blogging platform, was more lively as I do feel that people become more faceless and increasingly dull when all you know of them is their tweets.
