C'mon Now Baby
May. 23rd, 2012 11:57 pmElfasi and his lovely dog Chorizo came to stay over the weekend. It was great having a dog around the house again, especially a big tall dog who enjoys nosying around and discovering what everyone else is up to. He is so waggable and pettable! As Chorizo was here, we couldn't really go to many places so we decided to take him for a walk in the local park with his big frizbee before going to get some beer from a local specialist shop. This involved Chorizo sitting on the back seat with me, slobbering all over my leg before pushing his paw into my crotch every time he wanted to get out. Elfasi was delighted with the range of beverages he managed to pick up and it was great catching up with him. I felt very relaxed chatting about various things.
We decided to have a beer and pizza night while watching anime. I have already highlighted my fears regarding my lack of common interests in the Fandom but I do feel Japanese animation is something I could very easily get into and this could perhaps carve open some common ground. After the success of watching Panda Go Panda the other week, Elfasi brought up some of his DVDs and after ordering pizza, chips, chicken wings and a whole load of sauces and other unhealthy crap from one of our favourite local takeaways, we settled down for a night of animated madness.
The first thing we watched was My Neighbour Totoro, a classic anime in a similar vein to Panda Go Panda. I liked the randomness of this story, as well as the fact it was engaging without really having a protagonist or antagonist. From a writing point of view, it was very cleverly done and the plot twisted enough to maintain interest. It was quite a genteel film, a feel good story really, and the type of stuff that makes me happy. If I want to live in a particular world, that's the greatest form of engagement for me.
KO Beast Warriors was the second thing we saw, at least episodes 1-3 of it before we needed to retire (as I had work at 7am the next day). Elfasi very kindly left the remaining four episodes here and we have now watched those too. This is a short series but a charming one. The plot revealed itself slowly, which was a good device I thought, and there was real empathy to be had with the characters. The beasts v humans plot was always going to generate empathy. Anything furry related is brilliant so this was never going to disappoint and some of the batshit craziness going on was truly fantastic. And the theme music, I love the theme music. I haven't been able to get it out of my head all week :)
Elfasi had to head off the next day so his stay was rather brief and, as I said, I needed to go to work as May is my nightmare month. However, it was great fun seeing him and his four legged friend and I'm looking forwoof to seeing them again some time soon.
