I feel my first ever LJ cull may be in order. Times have moved on and people have changed. Some have migrated over to twitter, some have become entrenched in political views which I find objectionable whilst others I have simply lost touch with. I have also noticed a marked increase in negativity and cynicism over the last 12 months and this just wears me down. I'd prefer not to read it.

I think I have changed too - the opinions I had four years ago have altered whilst my friendships are now far more integrated in the 'real' world than they are online. I also feel let down by one or two people too, I am not going to hide that. It's a shame how strong friendships sometimes just drift away into nothingness.

I'll give it some thought but I may start the new year with a new direction.

Might cull mine. Some people I'm hardly in contact with and some groups are completely dead.

I think my major problem is that I vehemently disagree with some of the people whose journals I read. Politics in particular has become so bipolar recently that it's difficult to know what to do about this. And, as you say, I have my fair share of people to whom I used to speak but now I sadly don't.

That policy doesn't work with pubic hair though...

*nod* Good idea, especially if the negativity is getting too much to deal with.

Yep, there's been a lot of that this year. Some of it's understandable but with some people it does become somewhat relentless.

I really don't use mine much these days, beyond the filtered stuff, and even that has gone a bit quiet of late. Looking to get out and about round the country in 2011, but that'll be less of a furry thing and more just a social deal. I've kind of moved away from the fandom this year for various reasons. It exists more as a conduit through which to see friends than anything meaningful for me these days.

You should come up in January - it would be great to see you ^^

i'm not going to cull mainly because there are so few posts made my friends. I don't post much here more on Twitter as you know. But the limit of chars on twitter is such a pain i like to post longer posts here and link them to twitter.

I prefer LJ to Twitter, still do, but then I use the two clients for vastly different reasons. I would never go to Twitter to read about what I did two years ago, for example.

Mainly reason for not using LJ so much anymore is because there is nothing to tell.. at least that my case - it's the same old routine, but thought that I also have a routine about checking Twitter AND Lj as often I can :)

Life is always changing

Life is changing true, but surely that makes you equally if not more interesting than you may have been before. People wrote on LJ a few years ago, how come they are no longer interesting? Have our perspectives changed I wonder.

I did mine not too long ago, since it needed doing. Hopefully, I'm not on the cull list with you. I may not reply, but I do read your posts. ;) I've noticed the negativity too, but that's because everyone (myself included) is having a really tough go of things right now.

Nope, you are not on my cull list. It's the people who DO speak I have a problem with rather than those who don't. Some of the ones who are left are very vehement with their beliefs or mindnumbingly negative. I don't mind people writing negative posts but when it becomes relentless, it does start to wear you down.

Nope, you are not on the cull list as you raise some interesting points to debate and question.

Twitter has done a number on LJ lately it seems. The other main reason I don't post here much is due to the fact I don't often have time to break out the laptop much, and my phone refuses to play nice with session cookies, so I keep getting logged out of LJ and other websites when using my phone browser.

That is a fair enough reason - Twitter as definitely usurped LJ and I think that's sad. I don't see why the two can't live more in tandem. Still, it's the way of the world I guess, everyone wants instant gratification for less effort it seems.

eventually, everyone will just walk around with webcams implanted in their retinas, and all their friends can just log in and see what they're doing 24/7 without having to wait for anyone to tweet anything. XD

I don't mind negative posts but some of the relentless negativity is doing my nut in. I know times are hard but surely life isn't ALL bad.

I tend to shy away from negative posts and posts about politics nowadays, as I have nothing really to be negative about and have more or less given up on politics.

I gave up on politics on the day the tuition fees vote passed parliament. I now trust no one in politics and feel we are all being led to the slaughter. My views on politics are quite strong - enough to make me consider emigrating in actual fact - but I don't air them because I don't think anything constructive can come out of it.

As for negative posts - everyone feels down from time to time and the occasional post is understandable. But there are some who write nothing but doom and gloom and it's just started to become tiresome.

It is - I like Twitter but don't have the same affinity with it as I do on LJ. It is sad as a lot has been lost due to the migration. A few years ago, LJ felt like a community, which it doesn't at all now :(
