Putting the BAD in Badger...

lupestripeAs you may know I am a big football fan and it is very rare for football and furry to meet. Yet this is exactly what happened on Sunday with a heart-warming tale from Craven Cottage, the ground of Fulham FC.
It featured on page 52 of The Sun and also on Sky Sports News. It features their mascot Billy the Badger who delayed the start of the second half with his "breakdancing and hip-hop beats". The referee, Chris Foy, had to send poor Billy off the field and yesterday a statement was released on his behalf saying that he regrets his actions in front of the 17,000 strong crowd.
The statement read:
"I apologise to Mr Foy. I'm remorseful of my impromptu antics at the Villa game but badgers are hard of hearing and short of sight. Had I known that he was about to blow his whistle, I wouldn't have begun the breakdancing routine."
He was still criticised in some quarters though, not least from Sky Sports commentator Andy Gray who said at the time "Get off you crazy fool".
This wasn't the first time Billy has been involved in controversy. On New Years' Day he approached Chelsea's oft miserable manager Avram Grant and gave him a big hug. At the time, his defense read: "I just wanted to cheer Avram up as he looked miserable after the first half, although my boss wasn't sure it did the trick".
Billy the Badger's next port of call is Middlesbrough, my hometown team. I may be going to that game and I am looking forward to seeing the famous mascot in action.
Indeed, having followed the Boro for twelve years, often watching the mascots is more interesting than watching the match although the actions of Spurs' Chirpy (Crappy) the Cockerel in the Spurs v Boro game in November 2004 were somewhat scary - he spent most of the game touching himself by the touchline. I found it most distracting.
