Am I the only one who thinks this is a lazy way of creating B-sides for singles? Plus does a good remix actually exist? Every one I have heard without fail sounds far worse than the original.

Hmm I remember back in the 90's when you'd get like 7 remixes on a single. The Gossip have been isuing their cd and vinyl single with remixes this year and they have all been brillian alternative versions of the songs, and in one case "listen up" I prefer the remixes!

But yeah on the other hand a lot are complete bollocks and an outtake or proper b side is superior.

Even live tracks or demoes are more interesting than remixes in my opinion - at least then you get an appreciation of the genesis of a track. Maybe the remix thing is one of the reasons for the death of the CD single as they are all largely rubbish and to me represent very poor value for money.

I am not familiar with The Gossip - I'll have to have a listen sometime :)

Some remixes actually *are* good, but other than that, I agree. I prefer singles that actually have different extra tracks...

I feel ripped off whenever I buy a single (which I rarely do anymore) and it has three mixes of the A-side track. It just smacks to me of laziness and creative people lacking in ideas. And all these remixes usually sound like is someone rustling a plastic bag next to the microphone whilst the original song plays in the background.

Or Radiohead's latest album... (I joke - it's actually quite good).

Don't know that one...

It's a good album. It's called "In Rainbows". It's a download only album but uniquely you name your price - you can pay as much or as little as you want for it.

*noddles* Ah, yes - I think I've heard about that, at least.

Tis quite good actually but I did prefer the more rockier Radiohead. But then remixing and electronica never has been my scene.

If you mean new versions of songs, then Save Ferris' version of Come On Eileen rocks.

If you mean remixes, then "Smack my Orinoco Flow Bitch Up" works very well, combining Prodigy and Enya, and "Where Is The Love Torn" combining Black Eyed Peas and Natalie Imbruglia.

I can send you all 3 sometime if you like :)

I'm talking about songs (which are largely good) which are completely ruined when someone starts playing about with beats and samples and the phonics of the song. I guess it can be extended to cover versions too when the band that is covering is covering it in a style similar to the original. The saving grace of covers is that there are some very good cover versions out there, particularly when a song is interpreted completely differently in a new musical genre.

Enya I have always found a little turgid but good chill-out music. Prodigy are very hit and miss but I admire them. Come On Eileen is just an awful song. The remixes you mention sound interesting though - if you could send them I'd appreciate it.

Remixes suck, cover versions suck ... with 2 exceptions

1) Alex Harvey - Delilah
2) Sex Pistols - My Way

oh, and this ... bizarre concoction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkJdEFf_Qg4

That's amazing! I love it! And I imagine a Sex Pistols rendition of My Way will be great too! There are some good cover versions out there - I like it when a certain song gets adapted into a different genre of music - sometimes the result is quite exceptional. Remixes meanwhile are all terrible.

I guess the problem with remixes is that I associate it with rap and R&B music which is something I'm not a particular fan of in the first place.
