As you may have noticed, I have created a new twitter account over the last few days, @thepinkestpuppy. This will run in conjunction with @lupestripe. @thepinkestpuppy will be more of a personal account whereas @lupestripe will be more of a mind dump. I hope to use both proactively from now on and anyone on my LJ friends list should feel free to follow one or both accounts if you use twitter.
There are a few reasons why I have gone down this route. When I first joined twitter in February 2009 with @lupestripe, LJ was still reasonably active. Twitter was certainly not the hub of furry social activity that it is today and I never used twitter as a way of keeping in contact with friends. I had LJ, email and IMs for that. No, I used twitter to meet new furs from across the world and I started to collect quite a following. Some of this was through actively following furs whilst much of it was people following me because they liked the random crap I came out with. The result of all this is that I now follow over 2000 people with my @lupestripe account. This is very difficult to effectively manage.
Since then, people have migrated to twitter and they now use it as their primary social network. The prominance of LJ has significantly reduced and I have found that this diaspora has resulted in many friendships being lost. When you follow over 2000 people, it is very difficult to keep track of conversations, and that's if you notice them in the first place. I cannot spend all day on twitter due to my work commitments and this too has presented problems. I feel I am missing out on many things. Ultimately, I have felt increasingly detached from former friends over the last year or so and have decided to be more proactive in trying to retain friendships.
I find it very difficult to dive straight into conversations on twitter so I have said anyone who wishes to follow @thepinkestpuppy is welcome to do so, if they want to find out more about me. I will be using @thepinkestpuppy for my more intimate and deep thoughts. This means I will have no qualms talking to people directly on this account as they have opted to follow me. I know it's silly but it's just a mental state I needed to overcome. I am also not playing the numbers game with @thepinkestpuppy. I realise that for socialising, a smaller friends list is often best so I am hoping that this strategy will enable me to rekindle some of the friendships from yesteryear. I also hope, however, that some of these friends come back to LJ as it would be great to have the vibrant community from three years ago back again.
For those of you who are after LJ friends recommendations, scroll down to the 'Reviving LJ' post from a couple of days ago. I recommend anyone who has posted comments on that thread ^^
