Comment to this post and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

The following suggestions were supplied by [livejournal.com profile] avon_deer:

Pink

The colour pink just happens to be the bestest colour ever! I prefer a vibrant neon pink to a baby pink although both are preferable to all other hues. All this stems from hair colour. When I was 13, I bought Nirvana's In Utero album and loved the colour of Kurt Cobain's hair in the liner notes. From then on, I always wanted long bright pink hair as I thought it looked really good. Perhaps it was my rebellious teenage phase or forming a teenage identity but the lack of being able to do this at school was something to rail against. I eventually dyed my hair pink at the age of 25, which was slightly less cool. I also like pink for the girly connotations, being into sissification and transvestism in quite a big way.

Gambling

My attitude to gambling is the same as my attitude towards sex, drugs, alcohol and any other vice really. A handful of people may have a problem with it but the vast majority know what their limits are and can enjoy such things without any problems whatsoever. A flutter on a horse race is almost a tradition in this country and betting on a sports event does enhance your enjoyment of it, particularly if that event would be meaningless to you without placing a wager. The gambling industry is extremely tightly regulated, more tightly than anywhere else in the world, and bookmakers have a legal obligation to help problem gamblers. Of course, I work in the gambling industry and have forged a career out of sports reporting through the back of it, so if I was against gambling, it would be somewhat at odds with my chosen profession. Despite this, I rarely bet myself, although I can see the appeal of doing so.

Curly Tails

Curly tails are an odd one because seeing a dog's tailhole is often quite an unholy and ungratifying sight. I think curly tails look very cute on certain types of dog though, particularly huskies. I always like a tail with expression.

Beer

Probably best to see my answer to kyanno's post from a couple of days ago, my thoughts are expressed there.

Cambridge

Going to university there was something I just did. I didn't really think about it too much. Of course it was a privilege to be part of 800 years of tradition but I did think some of it was archaic and tradition for tradition's sake. I also feel Cambridge has a strong air of the middle classes pretending to be upper class, which was somewhat unedifying to watch. Punting is possibly the most tedious experience I have ever endured and, being a working class lad from Middlesbrough, some of my time there was certainly quite quaint. The degree itself was interesting and usually well-taught, although I imagine we were worked far harder than had we gone to any other university. This meant social time was at a premium and the porters system meant we were perhaps mollycoddled a little bit too much for my liking. Still, this didn't mean we didn't have fun. As a city, architectually Cambridge is an ill-defined mess of centuries of grandiose architecture, beautiful buildings individually but never really gelling into a proper metropolis. After about two years, its size grew a little stale for me and I was glad to leave after completing my degree. I do revisit regularly though and have many good friends there, so I would say I had a very happy and prosperous three years there.

Buses in Leeds

What can I say? Buses tend to attract the most ignorant and rude people in society who either delight in speaking loudly on their phones, listen to their personal stereos at deafening volumes or wipe the shit off their shoes on the seats opposite them. Language is ripe, babies are crying, prices are extortionate and the service is unreliable. I am lucky I live on an arterial route so if there is a delay or a cancellation, I don't have to wait long for an alternative, but I have heard horror stories from some of my friends about the services they must endure in Leeds. The problem is a lack of integrated transport policy though - while the bus company doesn't help matters, most delays are caused by traffic as Leeds is the largest city IN EUROPE without either a tram, trolleybus or light railway system. So part of the problem is the avarice of the bus companies and part of the problem is lack of funding for a decent transport system. I feel buses would improve if there was genuine competition at customer level rather than at tendering level but privitisation in the UK tends to deliver the worst of all worlds and this is what it has done here. If I want to go to the city centre, I can only go with one company and they know this. Hardly an incentive to increase standards, is it? The daily passes are expensive for what they are but buying a three month or a year pass I consider reasonable enough and far cheaper than a car, which is something I would rather not get. In the UK, life is often about choosing who you will be ripped off by and I would rather be ripped off by a bus company than by an insurance company. However, if I wasn't on an arterial route, I would probably feel differently. The benefit of a season pass is I can go into town whenever I like and not worry about the cost though, which is exceptionally useful if I want to go for a few drinks as this costs me nothing as I already have the ticket.

Working weekends

At Cambridge, we had lectures on Saturdays and throughout my working life I have always worked weekends. When I was working for the Government, there was the possibility of overtime and as I was in debt, I took it. After that, I started in the sports and gambling industries and there was little choice but to work weekends as this is when the majority of sporting events take place. In my last job, it was me working every single weekend all the time as I had an unscrupulous employer and this was detrimental to my social life. Nowadays, I tend to just work Sundays but I can choose to take off any weekend I like, so I don't feel working on a weekend is a huge burden really. And the extra money certainly helps in these financially tight times so I am more than grateful for the opportunity to earn some extra cash.

It is though, it's not particularly pleasant seeing a puppy's poop chute.

If you ever open up your own brew pub, you should call it the Pink Puppy. ;)

A lot of fascinating insight your post here. The part about the busses too. I imagine having a transit system does make it more easier to enjoy a night on the town, because you don't have to worry about getting a drunk driving arrest when using a bus, hehe.

Try moving a population of 740,000 (and an extended West Yorkshire Con-urb population of 1.5m) around using nothing BUT buses though. ;)

THAT is the problem Leeds has.
