Following on from Rustyfox's post from last week:

We shop at all the main supermarkets but recently we have taken a fancy to Marks & Spencer. It's only a few quid dearer than the main four yet the food is of far superior quality. This is not only improved taste but also health too, useful if you want to try losing weight.

We usually shop at ASDA for our weekly shop and Sainsbury's for odds and sods. ASDA is typically very cheap but the quality of the food is not the best. Sainsbury's is cheaper than it was but still far too expensive for what you get. This may be because we use local stores but I will never forgive Sainsbury's for raping me as a student - they had a monopoly in Cambridge and charged exorbitant prices accordingly.

For fresh food it's got to be Morrison's, which is also excellent for value. Their fishmonger section is first class while their range of cheeses is by far the most extensive. The same can be said for their booze.

This just leaves Tesco which is meh in every way. Add to that their aggressive and destructive approach to growing their empire and I do try to avoid them as much as possible. The most average of the average plus I don't like celebrities telling me what to do.

*I discount Waitrose as we don't really have these in the North and because they have forsaken the North I doubt I will shop there anyway.

**Of course I would like to shop locally in independent butchers and bakers but all these are open during office hours only, making it inconvenient - and indeed impossible - for me to do so. I am never really around at weekends, the time of the week I am most likely to be eating out anyway. No wonder the high street is dying.

I imagine the difference in prices between the big supermarkets very much depends on what you buy. For some, ASDA may be cheaper, for others Morrison's. We use ASDA (and M&S) mainly but that's because there is a big one near to where we live, which is also the nearest supermarket of viable size to permit us to do our weekly shop. I am sure if Tesco was closer, we'd probably use that. We do vary it a bit though and find all stores are much of a muchness regarding price, provided they are of a similar size.
