He's A Good Pup, That's Why We Love Him
Sep. 3rd, 2015 11:59 pmThis week has been Wolfie's birthday so we have been out in Leeds celebrating the occasion.
Like last year, we ended up doing two different things. The first, on Monday, was a birthday meal at The Pit with some of our closest friends while on Tuesday, Wolfie and I went out together to the local BrewDog bar, where we got to sample some wonderful beers from the Hawkshead Brewery as well as meet the brewers, two whacky northerners and a bloke from New Zealand. It was great meeting them and discussing beer, and we even got to recommend a few cool places in Leeds to them. As it was Wolfie's actual birthday, he also got loads of free beer from the bar staff and while the tasting session wasn't as heavily populated as I thought it would be, it was very much like going back to old friends and having a great time. Indeed, it was quite a free night for Wolfie as he also got a free birthday burrito from Bar Burrito before I met up with him, at the ridiculously late time of 8:30pm as Tuesday was Transfer Deadline Day and I had to work up to and beyond the window closing.
The prelude to his actual birthday evening was a trip to The Pit on Monday, where around ten of us met up for some drinks and a meal. Arc and Draken were present but only briefly, with the latter fearing his car would be broken into due to a duvet being present on the backseat. Consequently, they didn't stay for the food and took off rather quickly, with us trolling them about duvetgate for the rest of the evening. The meal itself was adequate if unspectacular. We hadn't eaten there for a while and it was a place we could all settle upon, but it was a little overpriced for what it was and the beer range was a little inadequate. Still, it was a good evening and Wolfie could even have had a free dessert, which he ended up declining for reasons of bloatedness.
It was approaching 9pm by the time we finished, meaning that many of our friends had to head home, but Luna and Stray stayed out and the four of us headed over to Shuffledog as they had not yet been. Stray fell in love with the place almost instantly and soon we were drinking beer before enjoying proper shuffleboard for the first time. I was a little reticent to play but as we paired off into two teams - Wolfie/Luna v Stray/Lupe I started to get the feel for it. Unfortunately, Wolfie and Luna were far better than us initially and raced into a 14-1 lead, although I started to pick up the pace once Stray had gone to get a beer, clawing it back to 14-2 while he was away. This was the catalyst for three excellent ends which saw us claw it back to 14-13, which was just as well as at 14-2 my competitive streak was getting the better of me and I was getting a little frustrated. I started to get the hang of the spinning and tactics of the game but alas I didn't bowl my final pebble hard enough, gifting the opposition the four points they needed to win the game. With our half hour session completed - and no one diving down the £10,000 shuffleboard as someone had done on opening night - we headed over to the other BrewDog bar for a nightcap but not before an embarrassed Stray had to ring me from the toilet to get me to ask the staff to get some toilet roll as they had run out. I hung up and let him stew for a while, before telling him he needed to use his hand. The staff were on board with this but we eventually did get him his paper and he returned to us meek and refreshed.
