This evening, we met up with Taneli and Stray before heading to see Dylan Moran at the Leeds City Varieties. This must be something like the fourth or fifth time I have seen Moran over the last ten years and I have always found him a little hit and miss, with his writing in Black Books definitely being the pinnacle of this work. Tonight was more of the same, with some absolutely fantastic whimsical stuff interspersed with periods that didn't quite work. Like with all good comedians though it was very difficult to tell when something was scripted and when something was off-piste with the whole routine involving the eclairs that an audience member had given to him as a present highlighting this perfectly. A newly sober Moran, off the wine and on the tea, meant that perhaps he lacked some of his edge but there was still barbed elements to his act and some fantastic imagery conjured up. Having started at 7:30pm, we were quite surprised when we decanted out of the theatre shortly after 9:15pm, with pretty much half of the evening remaining. This is probably the earliest I had ever left a theatre and the show did seem a little short and lacking in focus, albeit perhaps with a loose narrative about how life progresses. It did shuttle back and forth a lot though and on many occasions Moran asked the audience what they wanted him to talk about, with topics like Brexit and Corbyn (which he misheard as Carbon) cropping up. This only emphasised the lack of focus, which I guess is similar to how his mind operates.

Before the gig, we had met up in The Light at 5:30pm before heading off for food at The George. Neither Taneli nor Stray had been here before and we thought it was a good, cheap place to get food. We got the cod dog and blue stilton fries as usual, and they were absolutely divine once more, while Taneli's chickpea and goat's cheese burger and Stray's chickeny waffle thing were both good too. I was surprised to discover there was a twenty minute time for the table, meaning we hung around the bar area drinking Coke Zeros as we waited, largely because we are trying to kick the alcohol right now on account of the last two months of wild drinking.

After the show, we drove Taneli and Stray to Pudsey bus station, with Wolfie going on to his parents' house to pick up a jack on account of one of his break pads having worn down. From here, our two friends headed back towards Bradford on the X11 while I headed home to do guitar and write this journal, surprised I had time to do both things.
