Well that's my virginity gone. For the first time in my life, on Wednesday evening, I played on a games console. It was some shoot-'em-up type game for the X Box and I admit that my previously held (and I now admit misguided) misunderstanding of games has now evaporated. I doubt I will become a fully fledged gamer but I may start playing games a little more as I had great fun and I would also like to feel a little left out of one of the main interests of the Fandom as a whole.
I used to play computer games a lot (on the PC) but gave up in the mid-Nineties when I lost interest. Modern day games just weren't as good as the original Doom and Duke Nukem 3D etc however perhaps now I should give them another bash - after all 12 years is a long time and things have undoubtedly moved on since then.
My fear of being completely crap also dissipated quickly as my boyfriend was tremendously patient with me. In the end I was whooping his tail like a pro. However, I must control my competitive nature and learn to relax - if I can do that whilst gaming then I may be able to sort out a few other issues I have about not being able to relax in general. If this and my feelings of self-consciousness about me being rubbish leave me, now may be the time to start having some fun :D

Date: 2008-08-23 06:58 am (UTC)I now OWN said Xbox, and well, gaming's really come to the fore. I wish PC games were less in the FPS and RTS range, though Portal can always exist. No troubles there. :3
If you want something to replace Doom and Duke Nukem, try Halflife 2, Portal, Unreal Tournament 2004, or even the single playery Unreal Games (Unreal, and Unreal 2), Team Fortress 2 for multiplayer omgawesome fun, for MMOs I'd try City of Heroes/Villains (I really have to reactivate my account), try Morrowind for first person RPGing, aaaand also give FEAR a shot. The original one and Extraction Point are the best, the original moreso than Extraction Point. PErseus Mandate is alright, but it's not a scratch on the original, and it quickly goes form shityourpanties scary, to farcical lulz.
As for anything else? EMULATORS! :D
Fuck yeah Earthbound. :D

Date: 2008-08-24 09:56 pm (UTC)I also gave up after doom / quake / duke nukem days, and only started up again just this year. B/f bought me an xbox360 to take my mind of studying for exams, as I was having panic attacks over em and not eating some :(. Console didn't help at all, made things worse... but once exams were finished, I perservered with FPS games some, and it's all good now =)
Still don't like the majority of today's games...
Self-consciousness seems to disappear in a couple of hours of playing, for me at least!
