Surely this is cause for celebration, as it means Easter bunnies can't be far behind. ^_^

That's true, I do so love Easter eggs being on sale in January. Still, I like Easter a lot more - things are getting brighter, it's all about bunnies and the sweet scent of procreation is in the air...

That's just getting stupid.

*nod* Not surprising. My store already has Halloween items in the building...and we had back-to-school set before school even ended.

I do like Halloween, I'm a big fan of any excuse to dress up I guess. Problem is that by selling seasonal stuff two months early, we are risking devaluing the event itself.

Yup. That's why it's kinda galling to see Christmas stuff going up right before Halloween.

When you work retail, the holidays just aren't as enjoyable as they used to be.

I agree, although that may have something to do with the same CD of Christmas tunes being played permanently on loop for six weeks. I am sure I lost my mind at this time.

What galls me is seeing all the Christmas stuff before my birthday (November 20). Last year was the first good Christmas I have had, they are always associated with pain for me, so having it rammed down my throat doesn't help. The commercialism has also gone too wild imo.

"Screams" with you!

"I do wonder if someday...they'll just never take the stuff down period." Now if I could just get more gigs out of it....

I hope you can get more gigs hun, it would be great if you could.

I agree, eventually it will be 24/7 merchandising. I have never liked Christmas myself so to see it rammed down my throat four months a year really annoys me.

I'm sorry to hear that as I have always loved Christmas myself. But I agree on the over merchandising of it. it is repulsive to me as well. The season "begins" at Thanksgiving. Not in July or August. Hugs!

Any time after my birthday (November 20) and I can cope with it. I agree that the merchandising of it is really galling but to be honest, it's a week off at the dreariest time of the year and I normally have to spend it with my family. The one saving grace is the Christmas Furmeet (usually the Saturday between Christmas and New Year), which is always the highlight of the week :D

Our local Asda has advent calendars in... for Ramadan! o.o Is there anything they cant cash in on now?

Advent calendars for Ramadan? How does that work? Sheesh, a novel idea and one I wish I had thought of. There must be quite a mark-up on that. (Although whether Muslims will accept the cynical merchandising that is attached to Christian festivals or not, remains to be seen).

I can top that "Hawkins Bizarre" in Cambridge had the Xmas displays out last month.

No I am not kidding there, seriously.

That reminds me that I should check if they've started selling christmas cookies yet. It usually begins around this time (in some stores, anyway)...

Is that stuff like Lebkuchen? We don't get that over here but I admit that if we did, I would probably like Christmas a hell of a lot more.

From: [identity profile] schnee.livejournal.com
Yeah, things like that. :) Lebkuchen, Dominosteine, Spekulatius and so on...

We don't get that - all we get is Advent Calendars with chocolate that tastes like wax :(

And fruit cake, if we're lucky...

Fruit cake is nice.

Mmm, you should come to Germany for the christmas season some time. ^.^

Perhaps - it sounds a very magical place to be at that time of the year. All the snow and the tradition sounds amazing, particularly when combined with traditional markets and German confectionery. And fruit cake does indeed rock :D

Date: 2008-09-02 08:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] schnee.livejournal.com
Heh. If it's snow you're after, you should indeed come soon because in a couple of years, chances are there may not be any anymore. :P Well, up here at least - with the coastal climate, winters to be milder and summers cooler, whereas further down south, it'll (hopefully) still get sufficiently cold in winter for there to be snow.

The fact that Christmas preparations seem to start earlier and earlier every year makes me dislike the whole business even more.

I don't like Christmas period. I'm not a Christian so I don't see why I should celebrate it. The weather is always crap, I can't buy things in the stores easily and I usually have to suffer through the day with my family. It is very rare that I enjoy Christmas.

Date: 2008-08-25 11:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] schnee.livejournal.com
There's lots of other things you can celebrate in winter: http://schnee.livejournal.com/688138.html :)

It's still cold and rainy though. I take your point though lols. Being of a more pagan persuasion, I guess it will be Yule for me :)

That works. ^^ Or winter solstice. Or the Saturnalia...
