I have been wanting to get into anime for some time but I have absolutely no idea where to start. I have Wolf's Rain, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke but that is about it.

Can anyone recommend some good anime that I should buy/rent/borrow/torrent?

I thought about doing this before... except then I realised if I did I'd probably only be doing it to try and fit in more and look cool with other furries, something I don't do.

So I still have very limited anime interest. =;)

That's definitely not my intention at all. I have had a passing interest in anime for about seven or eight years, I've just never known where to start. Now I am a part of the Fandom with a strong anime interest, I thought I would ask. Yes, it would be nice to have another common topic of interest, but I am mainly interested because of an interest I have had for a long time.

I suppose someone will end up suggesting the usual Akira, Ghost in a Shell, etc *rolls eyes*

Well I personally enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle and Laputa: Castle in the Sky, though it might have something to do with the somewhat steampunk setting, talking of which I heard Steamboy is fantastic. The main character is from Manchester, not everyday you have a Japanese anime set with a Mancunian character lol.

For sheer silliness, get a hold of Dominion Tank Police.

Come look at my shelves and HDD next time you're visiting :P

In the meantime, try and get your paws on Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic (two completely unrelated series'), Trigun, Tenga Toppa Gurren Laggann and GITS:Stand Alone Complex to name but a few.

(Yes, GITS:SAC is Ghost In The Shell, but it's the series, not the film, which I presume is what Mr Otterson is rolling his eyes about pre-emptively :P )

Those, and Puni Puni Poemi ( a kind of weird not-quite follow on to Excel Saga)

Depends on what your interested in. The following suggestions are from what animes I have watched myself)

Machines and combat etc.. then I can highly recommend Gundam Seed (Not Destiny, thats set after Seed). Also Zoids Genesis or Neon Genesis Evangelion (not watched but everyone raves about it).

Fantasy/RPG style stuff, then .hack//SIGN or Final Fantasy Unlimited (guess what that is based off :P)

Guns and Shooting - Trigun.

Cars - Initial D.

Then there are the default big ones, Dragonball Z and Naruto for fighting and ninja's respectively.

How could I have left Initial D off my list? *bangs head on desk*

Okay..

Goodbye, Mr. Despair (dark comedy)
Speed Grapher (action/superpowers/conspiracy)
Princess Tutu (ballet/cute)
Ghost in the Shell (cyberpunk, lots of philosophy) (series and movies)
Bokurano (tragedy, mecha)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (mecha, psychological)
Last Exile (Steampunk, pretty)
Cowboy Bebop (Space/Action)
Death Note (Horror/Psychological)
Gunslinger Girl (Action/Drama)

that should be enough to keep you going. ~.^

Personally im damn fussy with anime to the point of saying that i dont like almost all of it (til proven otherwise. However I must say i was blown away by spirited away. From then on I've enjoyed every studio ghibli film I've seen. They're all quirky, odd and very bizarre but still good. Personal favorites are Porco Rosso and Howls Moving Castle.

On another note i also enjoyed a series called Cowboy Bebop.

Full Metal Alchemist is a good series.

As for movies, i have Spirited Away if you want to borrow that?

I am sure I have seen Spirited Away - it's a fantastic movie. Definitely one to watch with a group of furs sometime (and some rancid cheese pizza :P).

Scrapped Princess - Mildly hilarous but quite a serious anime series to watch. I found myself in tears in the final episode seeing the events unfold.

Code Geass S1 and S2 - Both series so far have sold me to this anime, its so well drawn and very indepth.

Gundam 00 - Again another well drawn and well written series that's got me longing for the next series to come out.

Read Or Die - Both the OVA and the TV series are worth a watch, its not an overally serious anime but it does have characters you can easily watch without worrying about a three episode long power up.

There's a hoard of stuff out there, sadly a lot of the dubbed stuff is rather mediocre imho (with a few notable exceptions).

Cowboy Bebop is possibly the best series I have ever seen, animated or otherwise. It was made in 1998, and I'm still going back and re-watching it. Great soundtrack too :P

Ghost in the Shell. The movies. The series ("Stand Alone Complex" and "2nd Gig"). These are excellent examples of what happens when you do it right. Superb animation, soundtracks and some of the best voice acting I've heard on an animated show. It has large over-arcing story lines, that can be a bit complicated at times, but it's well worth it in my opinion.

A good source of interesting stuff is the non-dubbed series and movies. A lot of torrent sites have sprung up hosting a vast array of fan subbed stuff. Some things to maybe check out are Blood+, Bokuranu and a few others.
Everyone seems to be going mad over Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann recently, but haven't checked it out yet.

A good torrent site to download stuff or just check out what's around (all the torrents have good descriptions, comments and screen caps) is www.boxtorrents.com

Also can I recommend (even if it is a bit dated) PatLabor. It's one of the shows I loved watching as a kid. Stick to the movies though, the TV series, although fun, is very typical 80's anime :P

lol, I suspect Lupe is a bit too old to be watching Digimon now, I personally think part of its appeal was watching it as a kid. Left a lasting impression on me, I became furry from it! D:

Just taking a quick look at the shelf above the computer. There's Nadesico, Rayearth, Nadia, Ruroni Kenshin, Ranma 1/2, Saber Marionette, Urusei Yatsura, Slayers, Tenchi Muyo, Yu Yu Hakusho, Video Girl Ai. All highly recommended, and enough right there to keep you busy for at least a year.

:O

I gotta go with Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, and Trinity Blood. Cowboy Bebop was okay. Never could much get into Naruto.

As a youngling I was addicted to G Gundam.
