Does anyone have any experience using social bookmarking links such as Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit etc? How do they work and how does a website become prominent with them?

I have registered a few websites with these facilities but whatever I do, I cannot get any links to appear in their databases. Can anyone help?

I'm using del.icio.us, myself. Tagging websites on there certainly DOES cause them to appear; of course, in order to get prominent, there'll have to be a significant amount of people tagging/bookmarking them.

Is there a good way of doing this? Whenever I used the other ones - nothing was appearing at all when I was searching for the articles using their search engines, which is what baffled me.

And do I need to stick any links or buttons on my website to increase prominence?

Well, a "bookmark this site using $SITE_A - $SITE_B - $SITE_C - ..." button bar probably can't hurt, although I myself never use these: I've got the del.icio.us extension for Firefox installed and use that (and before, when I used Seamonkey, I just used regular bookmarklets).

As for searching, I'm not sure about other ones, but it seems to work on del.icio.us, at least. Searching for "comeonboro.com", for example, turns up two hits - looking at them, whether these are spam or not is beyond me, but at least the search function works. :)

I suppose it all depends on what you ultimately want to accomplish - do you want to do your own social bookmarking (in which case d.i.u is probably not a bad choice, although I haven't looked into other sites), or do you want to encourage people to bookmark your site(s) as a webmaster?

I am effectively interested in increasing visitor figures and reputation of my sites - any idea what the best thing is to do?

I use StumbleUpon occasionally, I don't really see it so much as a social bookmarking thing; I just use the toolbar.
It takes you to random websites (within certain preset catagories that you choose) and you can rate the website/file-link as good or bad, it uploads the ratings and so on and so forth.

I've actually found quite a lot of decent stuff with SU

Is there any way that I can increase the prominence of my own website through SU and thus generate more visitors?

Meta tags are all fine hun, they're working wonders. But I am all up for increasing visitors by any means possible - was just wondering if these social networking deeleys could help :)

Welcome to the world of SEO. Basically social networking sites are a goldmine for the search engines, given they show links to pages that lots of people have thought of as valuable content. Except every man and his dog has cottoned on to this and tries to submit their pages in the hope of climbing up search engines, thus most won't show up unless lots of people link to the same page, and will drop off or not show up quite quickly.

If you want to get websites prominent there's no easy route. You need to focus on making valuable content first, and *theoretically* people will link to it themselves!

Content is not a problem - the stuff we have got has won awards in the past so I am not too concerned about it - was just wondering if there was a way to crack these social networking sites. I can't stand them myself but I can see how they are a viable business venture :)

I can't stand *most* of them. LJ is fine because the format is simple and it is just like a diary. Facebook I can't abide but it is good for business :)

As has been said add a shortcut bar so people can digg/slashdot/delicious/stumble you, the more people who then click the links the more prominent you become on those sites and in turn the more people click the links, etc, etc. Or that's how it's supposed to work anyways.

Another factor on delicious to consider is submitting your pages under a varity of tags, it'll increase exposure.

So how would I go about doing all that?

Do you use a CMS system or is it hard-coded?

Hard-coded and checked thoroughly.

Hmmm, might make it a bit more difficult...

It just means you might need to manually make posts about things on Digg and such to be able to link them on the bar, I'll have to do some googling.

Will discuss this in the New Year when I come round to yours. I think it'll be easier if you show me. Thanks for the information though :)
