Oct. 1st, 2011 11:38 amWe had a small pub gathering last night in the Town Hall Tavern, one of our favourite haunts. I had a delicious omelette with caramalised red onions and double cooked chips, it was heavenly, particularly with a pint of Landord and another of Golden Best. A most agreeable and convivial way to spend an evening, I am sure you will agree.
I fear we became a little too rowdy and chased a lot of the clientelle away though. A couple were looking over at us with some disdain. We weren't doing anything particularly bad, just talking loudly and there was some tickling going on. We also got told off by the landlord for throwing a small plastic straw around but he warmed to us as soon as we started discussing furry. Towards the end, he was our best friend and invited us to return, which we undoubtedly will. Nice chap.
We also had a bit of a run-in with the most arsey police officer ever. While crossing the road on our way home, two of our party were a little slow. A police van was stopped at the traffic lights and could clearly see our party crossing. When the traffic lights changed, the driver decided to speed up and then perform an emergency stop, just to prove a point. He then got out of his van and bollocked three of us, while his assistant just stood there and shrugged. Wolfie managed to pull them apart and resolve the situation diplomatically but it's good to see the police around here are tolerant and friendly. Then they wonder why nobody has respect for them any more. Another reason to dispair of this country (if there weren't enough reasons already).
Yesterday was also the day of particularly bad bus services. They were either late, non-existent or set off while we were still standing up, causing us to catapult ourselves on to people due to the abrupt change in momentum. And through all this, the drivers were either unhelpful, rude or obnoxious. I think there is a culture of fear within the bus company as these people are clearly scared of losing their jobs. That's what it looks like on the surface at least, I don't have any direct proof of that. Still, in a customer facing industry, surely you need to be helpful. Many drivers and conductors here are far from that.
