The Hairy Bikers - Larger Than Live

Both Taneli and I are a huge fan of the Hairy Bikers, and TV cooking shows in general, so when we saw that our favourite bearded Northeners were doing a tour, we had to get tickets.
We didn't know what to expect really. Granted there was cooking - a diet jalfrezi and a salmon terrine being the feature dishes - but there was much more than that. Indeed, in many ways it was like a comedy gig as Dave Myers and Si King had an understanding on the parallel of most comedy double acts.
There were highlights from their TV shows shown on a big screen, which were weaved into a narrative. There was also The Hairy Bikers Lucky Dip Strip which saw two lovely ladies compete with the Bikers for prizes, with the unlucky losers being forced to strip off on stage. Escapology also featured, along with a lot of transvestism and dancing, largely courtesy of Myers *shudder*.
And there were puns, lots of puns and disturbing analogies, such as dripping butter into a hollandaise sauce as if it was like an old women with a leaky prostate. There were also many disturbing nods to Nigella. Like many comedians, you could tell if this was improvised or scripted, while Si's straight man to Dave's funny man was hilarious, particularly with his excellent facial expressions.
So all in all, a marvelous night in the mould of the variety show starring two middle aged Northeners and a whole load of cooking thrown in. Unfortunately we were in the Upper Balcony so couldn't try the food but it was a great evening nonetheless.

Tut, tut.. "their" and "turine"? See me after class. =:) Hm! A diet jalfrezi? Presumably they went into how that was accomplished? Then again, I suppose with it being tomato based, you could indeed avoid oils - my method is to use diet ginger ale for frying that doesn't require crispness. ^_^ More of a poaching, I suppose, but it accomplishes the same task, while keeping the calories right down, and lends that nice gingery tang to boot. I ought to try more Indian style cooking - maybe I ought to pick up a couple good spice mixes to that effect, next time I'm along at the Borough Market. (Have you been? A real delight for anyone who enjoys food!)
Hmm. Now I'm getting the thought of you putting on a similar show, furry style, at some con.. =:D
(My dream furcon would have a full-blown Iron Chef challenge, complete with Chairman Kaga =:)

Date: 2013-04-18 11:10 pm (UTC)Sorry sir, I wrote the post on the bus and my signal is intermittent at best. It's an achievement just to post anything, let alone get the spelling right, particularly on a bouncy bus such as that.
Yep, they did the full recipe for the diet jalfrezi, it looked really good. Spices are very good for maximising flavour and minimising calories, and, as you say, you don't have to use oil for frying.
Putting a cookery show on at a furcon would be a great endeavour. Not sure how popular it would be though.
