How have fur's fursonas evolved over time?

I started off as a fox, then flirted with the bunny side for a bit. I then became a squirrel before finally settling on a wolf. I then became a more wolf/husky hybrid, which is where I have stayed ever since. Does this make me a fursona slut?

I initially wanted to be a fox but one of my friends was called Fox and he had bad personal hygiene so I rethought my character.

Also the pink was something else that evolved in time although I admit ever since I was 14 I wanted to have pink hair (I just didn't have the guts to dye it plus school and jobs kinda put paid to all that). In the early days of me joining the Fandom I had no idea what my fursona was going to be like - it was only at the Sheffield meet last June that I got the inspiration to go pink. It was then that my fursona was truly born.

Red deer. Always have been. :)

I am evolving through age.

How are you evolving hun? The evolution procedure I also find interesting as I guess we all mature and change in different ways. Does your fursona reflect this also?

I maintain my "fursona" is inherent, and hasn't changed much.

Red fox, non-anthro, naughty at times but really just wants to chase things and have fun. Maybe more of a dog in a fox's fur. Sometimes anthro, but that's more of an occasional break-away from my "norm"!

I never really choose this, it's just always felt that way and hasn't ever changed. I think it's an integral part of whatever makes me "me".

A dog in fox clothing? Surely such a thing is perpostrous *said in antequated toff accent*. My wolf I think is inherent too but I have always wondered what would happen if I shapeshifted and delved into my inner consciousness. Would it be a wolf or not? It feels right but I am one of the most indecisive people ever so to get my mind to agree on anything is tough.

I guess there are two types of furs - those people who believe their fursona *is* them and those who use a fursona to aspire to something they want to be. I aspire to the honour of a wolf but am I actually a wolf? Well, maybe. It certainly feels that way, albeit one with garishly pink hair.

The anthro/non-anthro thing is interesting too. I hadn't really considered that before entering the Fandom. The only anthro thing I ever considered was the power of speech - cartoons as a kid were a massive influence.

I don't know how it is for others, but I can say how I perceive things to be.

I know some that have changed their species over the years. I guess in part this was down to exploration. One particular person everyone knows started off as a fox, then became an otter, then a frog, and now a slug. I am guessing that for him at least it's a case of coming to terms with aspects of himself. From a "generic" fox to something more aquatic, to something really aquatic etc

For me personally, I've always been an otter. The specific details of my "fursona" (I hate that word) changed only when I got peeved off with being a "generic" otter. For me, the meaning of my otter side is more spiritual than just a character, and as such the physical side of the otter side is... well... human me. Not sure how a spiritual side can be physical...

...so I decided "what the hell" and in a particular IRC channel I was in at the time, the furs there liked to create collaborative characters. With that, I mean where they all contribute something to "make" a character. I decided to let them loose on a "generic otter" and I stole the things I liked the best that they came up with :) Hence being a 9ft blue otter with white feathered wings :-D And in a roleplaying side of things, a regenerative capability because I was tired of getting mock-stabbed / pouncesquished / etc ;)

So for me, there were only two stages. Generic otter, and then the otter I am today :)

It's interesting how you used external influences to create your fursona (why don't you like that word btw?). I suppose I did the same except I observed fursuiters rather than went on to IRC and asked opinion. Both ways are valid and they are certainly a good way of exploring your inner self.

Furry is a spiritual thing for me and being a wolf reflects that. My early years were all a matter of self-exploration too but is changing species a reflection of indecision, a moment of enlightenment or merely an evolution in our lives? The person I was five years ago is far removed from the person I am now so perhaps these evolutions are natural. After all, totemic shamenism often tells us that a particular spirit guide is often only resident inside us for two to three years. If that is extrapolated, then changing fursona species makes sense.

For all the years I've been in the fandom (lost count) I've been a Wolf and will be for the rest of my time. But prior to that i had some soul searching to do, I played around with many ideas over what animal, trying to find one i can empathizes with or have things in common. Quickly i layed waste to most candidates for various reasons. Some being Dragons, Felines and a whole array of other animals that i can't remember. (all predatory species) Then finally the idea of a Wolf came around and it fit not a second doubt came into my mind.

As for the name, well thats a different story.

Prey do tell the name story, that is another interesting tale (and one I may bring up in the future). You as a feline wouldn't really work, all slinky and sexy... :P

Soul searching is often hard to do but sometimes, when the answers come, it is ultimately rewarding. Finding your fursona was like that with me, it allowed me to express a side of me that had wanted to be expressed for a long time. In that respect, it was like a solace to me.

My fursona has evolved thusly:

* In 1998, when I first found furry fandom, I "became" an arctic wolf.

And that's it. :) Of course, I really was an arctic wolf before that, too, so I'm putting "became" in quotes.

Date: 2008-05-23 11:25 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Have you always felt you were an arctic wolf then? When did you first feel it? From the age of six I thought I was a fox, how early do these affinities go? Psychologists believe that 95% of who you are is formed by age three. Wonder what shared childhood experience we all have that makes us furry?

Why did you choose a wolf kitty hybrid? Hybridisation I have also found interesting. Why did you choose to be a hybrid? Was it because you wanted to adopt the traits of two animals into one? Do you have one that is more dominant spiritually? And why did you abandon your leopard?

Started off as a mouse of some sort when I joined Furcadia... this evolved into a horse, then I was a black cat for a long time. This evolved into a black jackal somehow just because I'm a bigger fan of long ears/muzzles, and then I thought I'd become more 'traditional' by becoming a tawny coloured one.

Date: 2008-05-23 11:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lupestripe.livejournal.com
That's quite an evolutionary process. Why did you feel the need to change, was it a spiritual thing or was it more environmental? A mouse to a horse is a big leap (although probably no bigger than from a fox to a rabbit like I did).

I used to alter my fursona once every few months, sometimes experimenting with different species, sometimes just tweaking minor details. Probably due to my fondness for shapeshifting.

But then I nailed the species and general modifiers a few months agi, and I just recently settled on fur colouration - at last I'm complete! ^^

Shapeshifting is definitely something I want to try but I am not sure whether I have the mental strength for it. Did you experience different fursonas to try and choose the right one or was it simply because you were undecided at the time? I experienced three or four before I joined the Fandom but I am not sure whether that would have been as intense or not as my wolf experiences inside the community. I always believed that before I joined the community I had to put my chips down and stick with a fursona, at least an animal. I was a wolf for the preceding two years so I stuck with that. I thought it was important as I wanted to be consistent, not only in my character but also in my name (a rabbit called Lupestripe would either be ironic or just plain stupid). The name came from the night I joined the Fandom. I must admit that had I known the likelihood of "Lupe" becoming "Lube", I may have reconsidered the name...

I recently changed my fursona into something else completely different, I only really did it on the grounds that my fursona for the past 7 to 8 years has been quite boring (christ how many two tailed kitsunes are there for christ's sakes or should I just slap SEGA or something?).

I also changed fursona name (again because my old one was quite dull) to Sorvall. So if people keep seeing Alexfox everywhere its due in part to a long time presence on the internet. I've still got to make a LJ announcement about it.

Sometimes change is good, do you think the change will help you find out more about yourself at the same time or was it a more pragmatic change. I like your new name hun, where did it come from? Kitsunes and foxes are similar in many ways, I guess it's not as massive a change as mouse to horse as above but it is still an important one nonetheless. I hope your new fursona works out for you :)

Needless to say, "Exile" is quite happy about this....

I'm quite reassured that some people experiment with their fursonas, in some regards I feared that my previous bunny tendencies made me less of a wolf. I think you can get different experiences from different fursonas though, particularly if it's on a spiritual level. Matt sounds a very interesting guy - are his fursonas different parts of his spiritual entity then if he adds them?
