A couple of weeks ago a friend at work came into the office with a beautifully crafted swan made entirely from folded paper. I got talking to him and I asked him if he would make a wolf for me. He kindly agreed and I received it yesterday. Apparently it took him all of Saturday afternoon but it really is gorgeous. Check out the pic!

Yeah. ^^ If I can think of something, I'll let you know, too.

Thanks hun - I'm sure something will come to me eventually - probably at a really inconvenient time like three in the morning. I've always been rubbish with names :(

Keep a notepad next to your bed and write it down. :)

I have post-it notes in my draw next to my bed which I blearily stumble to at three in the morning when I have an idea. I did wake up last night come to think of it but it was only because I needed to go to the bathroom - so hardly my most creative moment.

Yeah... but then, it's an issue that you can't force. :)

That's true but it was at the rather irritating time of 5.30am so I only had another hour's sleep afterwards before I had to get up anyway :(

*noddles* That's annoying, yes...

*hug* Yes, indeed. I always hate it when it happens - fortunately, these days, I usually manage to avoid having to go at night at all. I just hate getting up when I want to sleep.

Oh this was the first time it's happened to me in about six months - most of the time it's fine. As you say it's annoying to be woken up in the middle of the night full stop (or indeed at 7am for work - which I still count as the middle of the night to be honest).

*noddles* So do I. c.c

Oh why can't the work day start at a sensible time - like 1pm or something?

Because you'd only be able to leave work at 21:00. x.x

That's true but in many ways I'd rather that than start at 8am. Having said that the inevitable would be that I would just shift my sleeping patterns and would be no better off within a couple of weeks.

Oh the failings of the human psyche...

Or the human body that needs so much sleep every day. (Seriously, what is it actually FOR?)

Recuperation I guess - allowing physiological processes to slow down and to give the body (and mind) a breather. But I agree - life is short enough without having to spend a third of it sleeping - no matter how fun sleeping can be :)

*noddles* Yeah... it's rather annoying to look back at your life and say "I could be 20 now (instead of almost 30) if I hadn't spent 10 years of my life sleeping". c.c

I tend not to think of things like that though as you have to sleep - the quality of life in those 20 years would have been so bad had I not got any that I guess it's a compromise.

Also from that argument you could talk about time you spent on the toilet and the time you spent eating and drinking as being wasted too - it's a never-ending cycle.

Certainly true, but sleep seems so... well, unused. There's an obvious reason why you eat or use the toilet, but there is no immediately obvious reason why you'd need 8 hours of sleep every day. (I could understand something like 30 minutes, maybe, but 8 hours?)

Of course, you're also right insofar as that life without sleep wouldn't be fun, but that's just the point - it'd be nicer if we didn't have to sleep so that life could still be fun even without sleep. :) (At least *necessary* sleep.)

I agree but I think there is an evolutionary reason why we need sleep. Some animals like sloths for example need for more sleep than we do, others need less. I guess it allows us to cognitively function to our optimum capacity. It is evolutionary though so I guess if we wanted to train our minds to accept 30 minutes of sleep then we probably could.

Indeed acutally 8 hours sleep is generally regarded as too much. The problem is that humans really should sleep for a couple of hours in the afternoon at around 2-3pm. You may notice that you are pyschologically dulled at this point and this because the brain works on a twenty-four hour cycle. But of course modern living etc doesn't permit you to have a nap in the middle of the day (unless you work for one of those big corporate firms of course where you have your own hammock under your desk).

I'm not sure... I used to nap in the afternoon, but it always left me feeling like crap for the entire rest of the day - exhausted, unable to think, and with a huge headache.

That being said, yeah, 8 hours might be too much, but I think it's the amount of sleep most people actually seem to get, so there. :)

I should get 8 hours but I rarely get more than 7 - I'm really lousy at going to bed (which is why I hate getting up at 7am grrr).

I think with afternoon naps it's largely a question of time. If you oversleep generally you often feel worse than when you don't sleep enough and I think this is the case with afternoon naps. An hour long sleep is the optimum in the afternoon I think - any more or less and you will feel worse than when you started.

Oversleeping is definitely a problem, yes... mmm, I really need to start set my alarm clock again even on those days when I don't have to get up on a specified time (like today). I just feel much better in the end if I don't sleep for *too* long.
